Taking Note

After a week full of deadlines and appointments, I feel like a post about organisation and note taking is highly relevant. For the best part of the last 9 months I have been getting really into notebooks and their ability to drag you away from the distractions of technology. I think most people are very aware of the techniques tech companies often use to keep people hooked to their devices. For someone like me who relies on devices to be creative, their constant attempts to highjack my attention really sucks. I turned to notebooks to break that hold and allow myself to be distracted on my own terms. To this day I still believe it is one of the most beneficial things I have done both for my productivity and my wellbeing. While this disconnect from the digital world may be intentional. It defiantly has its shortcomings when trying to organise on a large, non linear scale. Because of this I have developed a sort a hybrid solution to note taking both in my personal and creative life. My focus for this week has been renovating by digital master archive of information. Or as most people would put it, messing around with my Obsidian notes.

As anyone who is a user of this software con probably tell. Iv spent more time tweaking the layout of Obsidian more than I have actually used it to take notes. Despite that, I now really feel like I have got it to a place where it will do a lot for me. I use the same vault for all of my notes even if they aren't related to my creative work. For me, the most beneficial thing about Obsidian is being able to see the connections between my thoughts and interests. In my experience most of my ideas come from making connections between two different thoughts and stitching them together using other bits of information. The way I have set my notes up allows me to do that naturally just by adding stuff. Pulling everything together this way helps me see connections where I might of overlooked on my own.

I feel like having this tool is a really important part of the creative process and it is very helpful when it can be done while still keeping everything organised. Without a method like this I quickly find myself hitting dead ends and struggling to priorities my ideas. Iv found it especially useful this week hence why i'm sharing it here.
